Principles of level gauge measurement

Berthold's LB 470 radiometric level gauge operates according to the radiometric principle, utilizing the physical law that gamma radiation is attenuated exponentially when traversing a substance. Since in this case both the absorption path and the source type are constant, the measuring process is influenced only by the presence of the medium. Other physical properties such as temperature, viscosity, color or pressure have no affect on the measurement result. As the absorption follows an exponential curve, the measurement with conventional container dimensions becomes virtually independent of density changes within the medium that is being measured.

High level of operational safety of our proven 2-wire technology

The radiometric measuring method ensures an exceptionally high level of operational safety. Another advantage is that it requires practically no maintenance – even under difficult ambient and operating conditions. The level gauge LB 470 utilizes high-quality scintillation counters as radiation detectors, ensuring that the best shieldings and the lowest possible source activities will be used. We guarantee that the radiation exposure of your operating staff will stay below the value permitted by law which generally is about as high as the natural environmental radiation.

The LB 470 level gauge is available with proven 2-wire technology. The nuclear gauges comprises a highly developed transmitter, ensuring easy operation and calibration procedures as well as the local display of measuring results. The measurement system provides both an intrinsically safe power supply and output signal. To ensure a high level of interference immunity, the signals are transferred to the evaluation unit via a technique with FSK-modulation.

Whitepaper “Managing Interference Radiation in Nucleonic Level Measurements”

Berthold has published the whitepaper “Managing Interference Radiation in Nucleonic Level Measurements”, wherein the common sources of interference radiation are identified and effects on the nucleonic measurements are explained. The paper elaborates on how Berthold, with its highly sophisticated radiation interference detection (RID) feature, helps plant operators to maintain a reliable and repeatable measurement.
