Reporter genes
Reporter gene assays are used to investigate the promoter of a gene of interest, i.e. the regulation of its expression. This can be done by linking the promoter of interest to an easily detectable gene, such as the gene for a luciferase, which catalyses a reaction that produces light. The high sensitivity and low crosstalk of our multimode microplate readers in luminescence gives them excellent performance for this application.

Interaction studies
There are many assays allowing the study of protein-protein interactions and other types of interactions: BRET and SPARCL® are measured using luminescence, FRET is based on luminescence intensity, and TR-FRET on time-resolved fluorescence. The flexibility of our multimode readers allows you to choose the assay that is more suitable for you.
Nucleic acid quantification
While nucleic acid quantification is often performed using UV absorbance in a microvolume spectrophotometer, using a fluorescence microplate reader provides higher throughput, sensitivity and reliability, thanks to fluorescent dyes of high specificity. Multimode readers are often the instrument of choice, because they can be used for the quantification using either UV absorbance (using a microvolume microplate) or fluorescence, depending on the requirements of downstream applications.
Tristar 3 Multimode Reader
The Tristar 3 is a user-friendly and affordable filter-based multimode plate reader that offers the high-performance analysis you expect from Berthold Technologies instruments. Equipped with ONE-4-ALL Optics for uncompromised performance of all detection modes, the system is ready to perform absorbance, luminescence and fluorescence measurements.
Immunoassays
Immunoassays offer the specific and sensitive detection of analytes of interest thanks to the specificity of the antibody-antigen reaction. While ELISA is the most popular type of immunoassay and it is detected by an absorbance measurement, other immunoassays use luminescence or fluorescence to improve its sensitivity. Multimode readers offer the flexibility you need to measure all your immunoassays, whatever the measurement signal.
Cell viability, proliferation and citotoxicity
ATP is present in all living cells and, because the level is strictly-controlled, it can be used as an indicator of viable cell numbers. ATP can be detected rapidly by light emission through the combined use of luciferase and a luminometer or a multimode reader. Many assays are available to assess cell viability, proliferation and cytotoxicity in just a few minutes by measuring the ATP content of the sample.
Other applications
Other popular applications which can be optimally performed using a multimode reader are calcium monitoring, protein quantification, assessment of apoptosis, measurement of enzymatic activity, epigenetics studies, and more. Tristar 5 Multimode Reader
The Tristar 5 is a modular high-performance reader equipped with independent, user-selectable filters and monochromators on both, the excitation and emission side for any measurement. This guarantees both, flexibility and sensitivity whenever you need it. The system supports advanced detection modes such as HTRF®, TRF, TR-FRET & FP as well as specific assays like BRET/BRET2, NanoBRET™, LanthaScreen®, AlphaScreen® or Transcreener®.
